This problem was caused by NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller

My computer will no longer shut all the way down. I finally push the on/off
button and close it. If that isn't bad enough, it sometimes opens on its own
and I find it waiting for my password when I get up in the morning. I let it
seach for the reason that it did not close down correctly. At first it
blamed Adobe Reader. Now it consistentlhy blames NVIDIA. It recommends I do
an update but I have already done those with no improvement. Then I found
somewhere that it was not compatable with Vista. I have cleaned my registry
and done other maintence but cannot get it to close properly
