Control Panel Crashes Windows Explorer

I cannot access the Control Panel in Windows Vista. Whenever I try to open
it Windows Explorer crashes. Does anyone know of a fix for this?

RE: Control Panel Crashes Windows Explorer

I am having the same error. I am going to try a new install side-by-side.
Did you do an upgrade?

RE: Control Panel Crashes Windows Explorer

Yes, I did an upgrade and I have tried to reinstall, but the installation now
crashes and I cannot do that. I am now getting a message that says that this
is a known problem and will be fixed in the next release.

Re: Control Panel Crashes Windows Explorer

I have found the solution to this problem:

Boot up in safe mode 9keep tapping F8 when the pc's just booting up)

then, navigate to windows/system32

then delete a file called cpqikey.cpl

This should fix your problem. Though, I've read that there may be other offending .cpl files in the system32 folder. Start with this one though as it certainly did the trick for me.

cpqikey.cpl is actually malware, so delete it regardless!

Re: Control Panel Crashes Windows Explorer

Memory dump problems in WindowsXP or Vista.

How to fix the Memory dump (Blue Screen) After opening the Control Panel ( Control Panel Access Crash problem ). You have to understand that most Memory dumps occur, when there is a driver that is not compatible with the Windows XP or Vista OS. So make sure your computers drivers, hardware and software are compatible with the OS you are trying either to upgrade or install. Vista is especially prone to incompatibility problems and a Memory Dump will happen. I personally recommend to install a new OS on a blank HD. Upgrades will in most cases take a long a lot of old drivers that will give you problems. Contributed by: webmmaster@philcomp.com

Mallware, virus, trojan horses etc etc could cause a memory dum, but all these can be fixed by your Anti Virus utility. Incompatible drivers are always the culprit in causing a memory dump.

Wrong Bud. Follow the instructions by ference. Malware is not always the problem, but incompatible drivers are,

Re: Control Panel Crashes Windows Explorer

The problem is caused by a program run by windows live messenger.
Go to default programs>Programs and features>remove windows live tool tip (program under windows live folder share)

Problem should be fixed
