    Always include the details from your Subject line in the text of your post.
    Otherwise certain search procedures may fail and in any case not doing so
    is unnecessarily confusing for your readers.

    FWIW I don't have your OS and that code is not listed on my OS.

    <cmd_output OS="XPsp2">
    F:\>set /a c = 0x3701
    14081
    F:\>net helpmsg %c%
    14081 is not a valid Windows network message number.
    </cmd_output>

    So what do you see if you enter net helpmsg 14081 (in a cmd window)?

    http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/lib...(printer).aspx

    (Live Search for
    14081 vista codes site:microsoft.com
    )

    <quote>
    ERROR_SXS_ASSEMBLY_MISSING
    14081 0x3701 The referenced assembly could not be found.
    </quote>

    Lots of help there (as usual). As usual error codes without their context
    are *useless*. Please try to find some context for either code in the logs
    that your update attempt would have created or modified.

    Re: Windows Update Error Code 80073701

    Windows Update Error Code 80073701
    Thanks for the tip on including the subj info in the body... I'm a noob at
    using these forums. As a further (and painful) admission of my lack of
    expertise, I found it a bit difficult to discern what actions you thought
    would help clarify the problem I was seeing.

    I don't know where to look for any logs you ask about, however when I enter
    "net helpmsg 14081" (in a CMD window), I get the response "The referenced
    assembly could not be found."

    Each time I attempt to check for updates, it first says I need to update
    Windows Updater and it tries to install:
    1138506A-B949-46A7-B6C0-EE26499FDEAF, so it looks like that update isn't
    installing correctly, hence the unfound assembly perhaps?

    When Googled, I came up with a Symantec white paper on Vista user interface
    privilege isolation, but not sure that it has any bearing as I get the same
    problem whether I run as Admin or not:
    http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/ref...l_Analysis.pdf

    Please provide additional detail on what info you would find useful in your
    analysis.
    Thank you for your time.

    Re: Windows Update Error Code 80073701

    Perform an in place upgrade of Vista.

    Run the Vista install from the running OS (not booting from media), and you’ll find the upgrade option. It takes a loooong time for the upgrade to complete.

    Then you may run into another bug. After the in place upgrade, upon first logon, you will be asked to re-activate Windows. This will fail. You need to choose the option to reenter your 25 digit key, the same one you entered before. Then activation will work.

    I've tried a couple other fixes, to no avail. (The one with pending.xml, the one from MS article 931712 [now removed], another involving CheckSUR.) The in place upgrade should also resolve an 80073712 error when trying to install Windows Vista SP1.
