Performance Suddenly in Dire Straits

I could really use some help here...

When I upgraded from XP to Vista, my laptop took kind of a performance hit
as far as stability and speed goes, but recently it has changed dramatically
for the worse. As it stands now, it is almost unworkable.

I got a strange error message and I ran a virus scan and got rid of a virus
called "viking" somethingruther... I also got rid of an error that
RUN32DL1.exe was messed up.

Despite these changes and a defrag and frequent virus scans my computer
continues to behave slower and slower. It can barely handle the internet now
despite it being very speedy when I bought it in early 2007.

Please tell me where/how to get this back on the right track again.

Thanks Brian, I'll look into buying more RAM.

Is there any sort of microsoft registry cleaner or anything like that to
help clean up the current mess that this system has become?

Jacob,

Wise Registry Cleaner is a good free program. I never had a problem with it deleting anything it shouldn't, but you should always look through the results before deleting.

Re: Performance Suddenly in Dire Straits

My computer's performance improved after upgrading to Vista. But, I have 2
GB memory and did a clean install. Which type of install did you do?

Re: Performance Suddenly in Dire Straits

Hi,

I have windows vista home premium and im facing some problems after moving from xp to vista.
I tried retriving my hidden folders which i had hidden sometime back, but wasnt unable to do so. Everytime i changed the setting to "show hidden files" it would go back to the original settings. I have admin access to the software, but i have never seen such a problem. Kindly help me out.

Hi Shaazhussain,

You will usually do better with Vista if you do a clean install with it. If noncompatible remnants from the XP install were left on it, it can cause problems with Vista. This tutorial will show you how to do a clean install with a Upgrade version of Vista.

Did you also uncheck "Hide protected operating...." ? See:

Re: Performance Suddenly in Dire Straits

Hi Shawn,

well i upgraded to vista, in the sense that i changed my laptop. Since i was familiar with XP, i thght Vista wud be similar.
The problem here is:
1. When ever i change the settings to "show hidden files" and uncheck the other two and click on apply. The settings changes as soon as i click on "ok". Hence making it difficult to view my folder.
2. I tried the option that u gave of unchecking "Hide protected operating". But the problem persists.

Kindly help me out here

Thanks
Shaaz
