anti-virus

microsofts anti-virus partner, trend Micro's PC-cillin Internet Security 14
seems to be recomended by microsoft seeing it's on the secruity centre but
for some reason when its on 99% downloaded and it must be on the last driver,
it fails to download, i havnt got a clue why. does anyone else have this
problem? if they actuly managed to download it, is it any good?

I tried downloading it twice and twice my computer went into restart with fatal error. I did a clean install and am afraid to try a third time.

Re: anti-virus

Well I've been using Avast! http://www.avast.com
avast has a free edition for home use. I've been using it since the release
of Beta 2 and never had a problem.

Re: anti-virus

When using Avast take a look at config.nt located in windows/system32. Which
is part of NTVDM (virtual dos manager). Advast adds a line in there that
will cause problems if you install any programs that need dos emulation.
Another side effect is the failed Advast auto update. I've had to uninstall
Advast
to be able to install some programs then reinstall.

Re: anti-virus

Avast auto updated on my setup but slowed up my boot times a lot.
I had to unstall and then clean up afterwards as it doesn't uninstall cleanly.
I ran it for a while but it was reported in my performance ratings as slow
boot times.

Re: anti-virus

I was able to download it several days ago. Did not have any problems - I
used firefox 2 beta 1 to download it. It works and looks just like their xp
version. I am happy with it.

CA has an offer you can't refuse:

CA's award-winning eTrust® EZ Antivirus is used by millions of consumers
worldwide. A new version is available that supports the Windows VistaTM beta
release, and it's FREE* for VistaTM beta users.

This special offer provides a free one-year trial subscription to eTrust EZ
Antivirus.

I'm using it now after trying Avast! and TrenMicro, which both gave me
problems.
This doesn't cause any on my machine , running the Public Beta 2. Low on
resources and does it's job very well.

Re: anti-virus

Thanks much. Your advice solved my problems with legacy DOS programs. I
REM'ed out the offending line in config.nt and now the programs work fine.
There doesn't seem to be any problem with Avast.

I,ve also been using Avast since the 18th thanks to the post here and its been doing fine. The download went well and even though some people might not like the feature I like the verbal message when definations are up to date. I know this is unrelated but I also downloaded Diskeeper 10 Beta and real happy with defrag features.

Re: anti-virus

I like Diskeeper. Where do you get the Diskeeper 10 Beta for Vista.
I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Thanks,
Ed.
