Dragging URLs to Desktop Not Working.

When I drag a URL from a browser to my Vista Ultimate Desktop, it creates an
icon, but clicking on that icon brings up a file location and not the web
site.

Older Bookmarks or Shortcuts I saved from before this Vista machine, work
fine. But ones created by dragging a link or url from a Browser to the
desktop don't work.

When I bring up http://atms.montgomerycountymd.gov/ in any browser, and drag
the link to the desktop, then clicking on the shortcut on the desktop (or in
a folder too) I get the following (I've replaced my name):
file:///C:/Users/My%Name/Documents/Desktop/Welcome%20to%20the%20Montgomery%20County%20Maryland%20Website.URL

The properties of the shortcut show no Web tab. The Location in the General
Tab shows "C:\Users\My Name\....[etc.]. It does show to open with my browser.
The Details Tab shows the Folder Path as "C:\Users\...[etc.] and finally! The
Computer is listed as the correct URL web address "www.montgomerycountymd.gov"

I have seen other discussions on dragging and dropping to the Vista Desktop
not working listed on this site (found using Google) but couldn't bring them
up in the search from within this Support site.

I'd appreciate any help.

RE: Dragging URLs to Desktop Not Working.

Mick,

Thanks for your suggestion, but it doesn't work either. I have tried all the
ways possible to create a web addressed shortcut on this Vista computer and
they all fail to create a shortcut that will take you to the web address
entered. Right Click and Create exists in IE7, but not Firefox which I
prefer. However, I did try it in IE7 and it produced the same incomplete
shortcut. What is missing or blocked is the inclusion of the "Web Document"
tab. This tab seems necessary for a field to be included that uses the web
address. Consequently, whether drag and drop, Create Shortcut, or even just
creating one on the Desktop using Right Click, New, Shortcut Desktop, etc.
all fail to have the necessary tab and editable url field.

I think this is the best clue. Why and how could a shortcut tab be missing?
Particularly t he one related to the url link function?

Re: Dragging URLs to Desktop Not Working.

I have no problem when I use the right mouse button to drag and drop an
entry in my favorites list to my desktop and select the Copy option. Is
this the method you tried?

Re: Dragging URLs to Desktop Not Working.

JW,

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, that also doesn't work. I still get
a non-url shortcut, without the "Web Document" tab that is necessary for it
to link to a web address. Also, this Right Click method is IE specific,
doesn't work in Firefox. But in any event, it doesn't work. I am still unable
to figure out why this particular Vista doesn't make web shortcuts!
