| | Re: Windows failed to start Rick, The steps in kb/919529 do not work. I get a message that Bootsect.exe is not recognized as an executable or batch file error message. chkdsk /r does not work. I get an error message that the disk can not be locked and the disk is protected. I guess you would have to be able to get to the command prompt from within the Vista installation for these to work. From the boot disk they certainly do not for me. I really appreciate your continued help. If nothing else I am learning all kinds of neat stuff that doesn't work LOL. I have ordered a new copy of Vista Home Premium and now I suppose I will need to figure out how to install over the old version and retain my installed programs and their registration in the registry so I can use them. I do have a current backup but the program I used, Acronis, doesn't work if you can't get to the hard drive through Windows and the Boot Disk I made with it will only allow me to permanently erase a HD not reach the backup software. So much for backups - will be looking for a better backup solution also. Any further suggestions or information on re-installing using a new copy and new key would be most appreciated. | | Re: Windows failed to start Hi Bruce, Actually, once you have a Vista disk to boot from, you should be able to run the bootsec repairs in that article as you will be logged into that installation after booting and loading the recovery console. If all else fails, just install without formatting. The old installation will be moved to a windows.old folder so that you can retrieve any data. Programs would need to be reinstalled. -- Best of Luck, Rick Rogers, aka "Nutcase" - Microsoft MVP http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Windows help - www.rickrogers.org My thoughts http://rick-mvp.blogspot.com "Bruce" <Bruce@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:E737A599-CD39-43E0-8576-D0078D273144@xxxxxx Quote: > Rick, > The steps in kb/919529 do not work. | | Re: Windows failed to start Rick, Since I last posted Acronis the people who make my backup software responded to my request for assistance with an ISO file that I burned to disk and used to boot and run their MBR creating program. After that when my Vista disk arrived I booted with that. It said I needed to have something fixed, fixed it, and now I am back up and running as if nothing happened. So I have an unused new copy of Vista just to make me feel warm and fuzzy. The only things I had to do to completely restore the machine to exactly how it was is to have Vista re-establish the Network connection and realize that my old disk J: has been renamed to disk F: Again thanks for all your assistance and help. It seems that all I needed was a MBR creation program that actually could re-create a completely new MBR file.
