This is interesting

I'm not sure if this is the right news group for this, but get this. I just
installed 4GB of RAM, bumping the system memory up to 6GB and I'm getting
all sorts of video display problems all of a sudden.

I'm running:
OS Name Microsoft® Windows VistaT Ultimate
Version 6.0.6000 Build 6000
Other OS Description Not Available
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation
System Name MIKE-PC
System Manufacturer System manufacturer
System Model System Product Name
System Type x64-based PC
Processor Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.00GHz, 3000 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical
Processor(s)
BIOS Version/Date Phoenix Technologies, LTD ASUS P5N32-SLI PREMIUM ACPI BIOS
Revision 0901, 06/11/07
SMBIOS Version 2.4
Windows Directory C:\Windows
System Directory C:\Windows\system32
Boot Device \Device\HarddiskVolume1
Locale Canada
Hardware Abstraction Layer Version = "6.0.6000.16386"
User Name Mike-PC\Mike
Time Zone Eastern Standard Time
Total Physical Memory 6,141.75 MB
Available Physical Memory 3.96 GB
Total Virtual Memory 12.08 GB
Available Virtual Memory 9.92 GB
Page File Space 6.29 GB
Page File C:\pagefile.sys

and a nVidia GF6800GT with MS' lastest drivers...

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Look in the motherboard manual for info regarding type of memory and
configuration in the slots.

According to the manual, the CAS latency should be the same for all sticks.
Also, the two banks should hold equal memory amounts, so should be 2 + 1 ..
2 + 1.

You may also benefit from a BIOS upgrade assuming that there is a later BIOS
update available..

Hi Mike,

In addition to Mike Hall's post, you might be better off upgrading to 8GB
rather than 6GB thereby ensuring that ALL memory modules are identical in
size as well as speed.

Re: This is interesting

Hi Dwarf

I've Vista Home Prem. I had 4Gb ram in, ASUS board, Nvidia 8800GT, and a
Quad 2.4Mhz CPU. Score of 5.2
However, after reading your post, I purchased a further 4Gb of RAM (Exactley
same cas etc & make) and after updating the index, it returned a score
of.......5.3!
Vista recognises only 4Gb of RAM, (the Board however reports 8.04Gb RAM)
I've updated ALL drivers including Vista. Please, if you have any suggestions
for me I would be very grateful!

Re: This is interesting

Maybe you were taken in by poor advice. Vista Home Premium can't use more
than 4Gb of RAM.

Re: This is interesting

The 64bit version of Vista Home Premium can use more the 4GB of RAM the 32
bit version can not.

Re: This is interesting

Yeah, I knew that. In the post I read he didn't specify, so I assumed it
was the 32-bit version. Maybe I didn't read high enough up the thread.

Hi Bozsvfr,

You can order the 64 bit DVD version of your Vista from Microsoft here for just $10 S&H fee. Then you can truly use all of your RAM.
