Gordo,

What kind of internet connection do you have? How old is the computer?
Did Vista come preinstalled or did you do an upgrade, and if you did an
upgrade did you do an upgrade only or did you do a clean install? How many
gigabytes of RAM do you have and is it dual channel RAM? What kind of
processor? What size is your hard drive? What are the performance settings
of your internal drive and any external drives you may be using? What are
your Index settings? What crapware (third party software) came preinstalled
on your system and is it still there? Which antivirus or security suite came
with the computer and are you still using it now? How many programs are
starting at boot time and which programs are they? How many antispyware
programs are running, are more than one of them running in real time at the
same time and which programs are they? What is the size of your virtual
memory? Have you checked Windows Update and Microsoft Update for all the
latest hotfixes and performance updates? Have you checked Device Manager for
any problems? Have you checked Problems and Reports to see if any known
problems have been listed there? Have you checked the Event Viewer for a
listing of the problems you are having?
Vista is a much different operating system than XP. It is much more
secure and more complicated internally than XP. Vista is also designed to
use all the memory it can whenever your system is running, which is a good
thing. Vista also requires much better and more advanced hardware. The
performance of Vista is directly related to the internal hardware of your
system and the capabilities of the hardware.
Vista SP1 will be released very soon and should take care of some of
your problems. I'm sure you will be very pleased with Vista once you have
addressed the issues you are facing and become familiar with the manner in
which Vista works. It is superior to XP in many ways. However, if you have
any problems many of the other people in these discussion groups are very
knowledgeable and competent and they will be more than willing to help you
solve your problems. However, nobody can help you unless you let them know
the specifics of your system and ask direct questions about a particular
problem. "Why is Windows Vista running slower on a new hp" is not going to
get you any answers. Asking many questions in the same thread about
different problems will also not get you very far. Be specific.
Gather all the above necessary information and then repost a question
about one specific issue. Once you have solved that problem you can then
start a new thread about a different problem. Please be polite and precise
when asking for help with your situation. The information you receive in
these discussion groups is provided by volunteers who are willing to help
you during their free time. The results you get from these people are
proportional to your attitude and the effort you put into it when seeking
assistance.
I hope your problems are solved quickly and to your satisfaction.

How much RAM do you have? If it's less than 2GB, that's probably the problem and if so you'll need to add more or attempt to use the ReadyBoost feature.

Also, if it's a really new system, then it may not have had time to create a decent superfetch cache yet.
