Start up problem

I have Vista ultimate running on a Dell Inspiron 530S. It starts up as usual
until the welcome screen, after that I don't get my usual desktop with icons,
task bar, start button etc. I can use all programs but would like to be able
to have the desktop back.

I have done a check and the computer reports that all is running properly. I
have updated the BIOS.

I have done a System Restore.
Thanks

Re: Start up problem

Is this a sudden problem, a new problem or an ongoing problem?

Have you recently installed any programs?

What firewall, anti-virus application or security suite is installed? There
are some that cause problems which do not appear immediately.

Re: Start up problem

It is a sudden and new problem. I shut the computer down one night a week ago
and the next morning the problem with the desktop display was there.

Recent installations have been updates to Spybot Search and Destroy, Firefox
and Adobe Reader. I have installed Realplayer and a Scrabble game from
Spintop media. After the problem started I have installed the Vista Service
Pack and updated the BIOS.

I have McAfee Security Center and Windows Defender.

It is a home computer and I am the only user.

Thank you for replying.

Re: Start up problem

McAfee is known to cause problems in Vista. Sometimes they don’t show up
immediately.
Replace McAfee with the free AVG http://free.grisoft.com/ or Avast
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html, and Windows Firewall and Windows
Defender. Disabling McAfee is not enough. You need to completely uninstall
it.
McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool

You might also try uninstalling all the recently installed programs. If that
solves the problem reinstall them one at a time until you find the culprit.
