Hmm... I think we can at least guess that it isn't 0. 1 down 15 to go... ; ) <cmd_output OS="XPsp2"> E:\>set /a c = 0x50 80 E:\>net helpmsg %c% The file exists. </cmd_output> Quote: > > When i try and open windows defender or start my computer up i get a message > that say's "This application has failed to start because of WINHTTP.dll was > not found". and the user interface has stopped working correctlly. That doesn't have anything to do with WU. You may get more knowledgeable help from a newsgroup which specializes in your OS. Cross-posting to one for convenience. However, it is a good clue. Did you check to see if, in fact, you do have that module anywhere? If you do, the message probably means that a dependent module of winhttp.dll is either missing or not registered properly. Unfortunately the DLL Help Database has not been updated to include information for Vista but this can give you some more ideas about that: http://support.microsoft.com/dllhelp...280&l=55&det=1 Another tack to take would be using DependencyWalker's Profile feature with regsvr32.exe and use it to trace a re-registration of that .dll Quote: > > The a second box appears saying "Windows SQM Consolidator stopped and was > closed" Try to find out which program is issuing these messages. E.g. open Task Manager, find that window listed in the Application tab, right-click on it and use the Go to Process command. That should switch you to the Processes tab with the appropriate process name selected. What do you see? Also, you might get more clues about these messages and others which aren't being highlighted in message boxes by using your Event Viewer. You still haven't explained where you are seeing this (partial) error code! You're either going to have to do some diagnosis or wait for someone else who gets the same symptom to figure out something worth trying to change your symptoms.
