Bluescreen error; Unexpected shutdowns; Failure - Security Options

Hi -

I have Dell Inspiron 9400 with Vista Basic.

My computer is having consistent problem with random reboots, problems
shutting down or restarting and "Windows recovering from unexpected
shutdowns".

I tried to copy the error but apparently lost the text. Will cut and paste
next time occurs.

When it happens, Vista displays an error message, "Windows has recovered
from an unexpected error."

The message details says Bluescreen.... and if I CTRL-ALT-DEL, the system
says "Failure - Security Options dialog". Computer is intermittently unusable
because of this problem. I will probably get Dell to troubleshoot but wanted
to see if anyone had any input.

Thanks

Max

Note: I just got a new battery from Dell due to last battery failing.

Max,

if it is truly random and doesn't depend on what the computer is
doing, then it is likely a hardware defect. Most frequent is
memory chip failure, followed by a loose contact and by other
chip failures or overheating.

Re: Bluescreen error; Unexpected shutdowns; Failure - Security Options

I had the same problem and it was caused by my Norton Antivirus. I
uninstalled it and got a different program (Avast
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html), and now I don't have any
problems. I don't know a lot about computers, but this was suggested to me
and it worked. Hope this helps.
