| Vista Ultimate | How to turn Indexing Service off? I know it is a very stupid question - I simply do not remember how - but what's the way to turn Indexing Services off? Is it through "gpedit" or "msconfig"? I searched in both but couldn't find it, and I remember shutting it down couple of months before! BTW, I have Vista Ultimate x64 installed. Thanx. |

Right-click the service Windows Search, from the context menu select Properties. Stop the service, and the change the start-up option from automatic to disabled. Charlie42 |

| Ultimate x86 | Re: How to turn Indexing Service off? Indexing Service and Windows Search are two different things. Windows Search can be enabled or disabled exactly the way Charlie42 described. To enable or disable the Indexing Service your should write "optionalfeatures" in the run box (without the quotes, of course) and uncheck Indexing service. Most probably you'll fin it uncheked in the pop-up window because it is disabled by default. |

| Vista Ultimate | Re: How to turn Indexing Service off? Thank you guys. I'm trying to do this because my HD sometimes starts action and freezes some of the things I might be doing at the moment, like watching a DiVX or XViD file, and I thought maybe it could be the indexing stuff. Any tips? |

| Ultimate x86 | Re: How to turn Indexing Service off? you might, mabe, limit your startup programs and leave just what you really need. You can also open the Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc or right click the taskbar and select it from the contex menu). Go to the Processes tab. You can see there how much CPU and Memory the running processes use. In case of the system idele process, the higher the better. You may consider closing some of them. The consequences cannot be fatal, you may have to log off, restart pc if you close some important system process. Use Google Search to read about services in Vista. Lots of services can be disabled, depending on what you use your pc for. Try to update your audio driver and your bios. Turn of aero and unnecessary visual elements if your harware is not very strong! |
