Task Manager

Hi, my son deleted the Task Manager in accident trying to fix some mess that
was caused apparently by a virus. I've tried the alt+ctl+del and it would not
open. What can I do?

Re: Task Manager

Assuming you have cleared the machine of the virus -

Taskmgr.exe should be listed in the %SystemRoot%\system32 directory. If you cannot find
the file, you can extract it from the Windows XP CD. To do so, you can perform the
following steps:

Insert your WinXP CD into the CD Drive
Click Start>Run
type cmd press Enter.

At the Command Prompt mode, type the following command:

Example:-

F: (This assumes the F is the CD Drive)
cd \i386
expand taskmgr.ex_ %SystemRoot%\SYSTEM32\taskmgr.exe

Re: Task Manager

Perhaps use the System File Checker to try and replace any missing files -

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833
Some Windows Vista functions may not work, or Windows Vista may stop responding

The other alternative is a repair install perhaps.

Re: Task Manager

Hi, mm4835mk.

Have you tried other ways to start Task Manager? Right-click the Taskbar
and choose from the context menu. Or open a Command Prompt window and run
taskmgr.exe from there.

As TaurArian said, "Taskmgr.exe should be listed in the
%SystemRoot%\system32 directory." This is true for Vista, as well as WinXP.
It it's not there, then run the System File Checker: sfc /scannow

The virus may have done other damage, of course, so a repair install may be
your best (though not quickest) solution, but it doesn't work the same way
in Vista as in WinXP. Google for "repair install" +vista and you should get
over 100,000 hits; the first one I get, by MVP John Barnett, offers step by
step instructions:
