| | Vista Usability I'm 'using' Vista Ultimate -- Or am I -- i'm feeling more like Vista is using me. I'm must tell you that I struggled long and hard in my decisoin of whether to stick with Vista (on my new laptop) or downgrade to XP pro. I choose Vista. However, as each day passes, I am regretiing my decision more and more. Yes, vista is pretty. But i'm a power user, and I guess I just thought Ultimate would allow me to have pretty and power (i.e., control) at the same time. This isn't the case. With each version Microsoft is dummying down the software. Making it less controllable by those know how and choose to control their operating system. A perfect example (and only two of many i've noticed) is backup and defrag. I could not imagine modern backup software not allowing you to control backup at the file level, or not allow you to set the directoy where the backup should go. Or, having ANY program without command-line options for those of us who want to control its use. It's amazing to me. This is how it was decades ago when we were lucky to have a backup. Defrag isn't any better -- the theme there is HIDE everything about what's going on. Who are you serving by eliminating this control? Why are you trying to look and act like a MAC? I'm dissapointed. I use windows for the control. I don't us MAC because of it's lack of control. And all Microsoft is doing is wrapping each piece of functionality - one-by-one - in a 'dummy' wrapper. You are isolating your power users to the point of abandoment. If you feel you must do this, why not just in the home version? Or, why totally eliminate the access door for those who choose to enter? Can't you (Microsoft) just once be innovative on your own without trying to copy or emulate someone or something else? Put your wrappers on if you must, but don't put them on with the attitude of 'we know best, and it's this way or the highway'. Becasue, before you know it, those of us who ACTUALLY DO know best will begin to to take you up on your travel offer. So, let's see an SP2 (quickly) with some true microsoft innovation. Put back the control everywhere you've removed it -- everywhere your design team said 'they don't really need to do this, they'll just get themselves in trouble and generate a support issue"! | XP Pro/SP3, Vista HP | Re: Vista Usability Unfortunately, MS ain't about to change anything by the looks of it. If you want control, then there is no choice but to opt for third party applications that have superior functionality and control. For backups, try Acronis True Image. This is like the standard software for this stuff. if i am not wrong, you can specify the exact type of backup you want to make. Complete hard disk drive copy, cloning and image backup software: computer files and disk copying For defragmentation, try Diskeeper 2008 Pro. It's the best defragger around in concept and execution. | | Re: Vista Usability I agree. I will definitely be looking at some 3rd party solutions - i'll check those two out. Too bad and sad right? That one would have to augment the 'ultimate' with 3rd party soulutions. Oh well. "Benjamin" wrote: Quote: > > Unfortunately, MS ain't about to change anything by the looks of it. | | Re: Vista Usability Yea I know, but I really can't. The reason is that I am a developer in microsoft technologies and use all their tools (Visual Studio, .net, IISm SQL Server, etc.) Linux just wouldn't be a solution for me.
