| | Vista really slow start-up When starting vista I get the usual 1st start page followed by the F1/F2 for setup. It then goes to the flashing bar for anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes. Then starts normally. Defender shows no problems that it can detect, pc-cillin shows no problems. I also have to unplug my router everytime I boot or i can't get the internet. My guess is that its being conncted or hacked if you will by another computer....any thoughts?? Thanks!! |

| Vista Home Premium 64 bit SP1 | Re: Vista really slow start-up I use Control Panel Classic View so your setup might look different, but in there somewhere should be Administrative Tools=>Event Viewer=>Windows Logs. See if there's entries about errors or warnings. Sounds like maybe something Plug & Play ain't playin' nicely. Another thing you can do is boot into safe mode and watch the startup messages(choose the option to not use the boot screen but watch the console for the startup output.) You might see something having problems there. |

| Vista Business x64 | Re: Vista really slow start-up I tried booting with OS boot information setting. It loads the drivers very fast upto crcdisk.sys. Right after that the screen changes and there's Microsoft Windows version blabla SP1, 4 system processor system etc. Then it thinks a bit and then new text comes up with something like: Code: Checking file system on C: Volume ia clean Windows has finished checking the file system It used to boot in about 20 seconds. Why is it checking the file system so long time and how can I make it take less time or turn the checking off? Thanks |

| Vista Home Premium 64 bit SP1 | Re: Vista really slow start-up There's a chance it may be doing a chkdsk on every boot now. Search on "clearing the dirty bit" or something similar. When you try to do a chkdsk C: /f say, the file system can't be fixed while it's running Windows, so it sets the "dirty bit" meaning on next boot do a chkdsk /f for the drive. You cannot clear the dirty bit with a file system command. chkdsk has to run and clear it. There's an article out there somewhere that tells how to deal with it. So search on "clear dirty bit" or "chkdsk runs on every boot" and you should find it. Probably MS KB article but likely there's other articles on tips sites(maybe including this site.) Sounds like that's what's happening. |

See if you can find a boot log or how to turn boot logging on and see what it says. edit: btw I see a lot of references to Western Digital drives and slow booting. One guy had WD external USB and the boot returned to normal after unplugging before bootup. Don't know what you have for hardware but if you have external stuff that's easy to unplug you might one at a time it and trial and error the thing if nothing shows up in the logs.
