my ls40 Toshiba satellite laptop has 2 memory cards of 512mb. I wanted to
upgrade this to 2gb so bought 2x 1gb cards. the computer would not start up
using both these and would only work when I inserted the 1gb with the 521mb
cards. The performance does not seem to have increased and when I checked in
the welcome center (vista) it stated that the ram was just 504mb. I am now
totally confused.

Any old ram may not work.
Use a memory configerator, as available at eg Crucial or Corsair.com to find
memory guarenteed to work on your sys
