lsass.exe runs on for 20 minutes

I've been trying for over a year to quiet the HD on this Vista Home
Premium machine.

The latest culprit is lsass.exe. It seems to want to touch every registry
value and file on my system and can run on for 20 minutes keeping
the HD access LED solid!

Just for an experiment I added it to my ProcessKiller utility. No good!!
Right away get a notice of a really big error so that Windows will
reboot in one minute!! There seems to be no way to quiet this annoying
piece of, er, software!!

Anyone had success with it? It's really a PITA!!
