Vista - Vista randomly freezes every few minutes for about 2-4 seconds

I have a relatively new laptop (few months old) with vista home premium 64 bit...and starting yesterday it has been freezing every 10 minutes or so for a few seconds....when it freezes it makes a "drumroll" type sound. If anyone could help me resolve this problem I would greatly appreciate it, thanks in advance.

Just to clarify is the "drumroll" from the speakers or the computer itself?

just thinking that some program may be trying to start and causing the problem, do you have an e-mail check or something similar set on 10 minutes?

it's from the computer...it sounds sort of like a "drumroll" or the sound that a CD makes when it skips in a CD player...and I do not have any programs set to start in 10 minute intervals

also, it tends to happen more frequently when I play computer games as opposed to just browsing the internet...though it DOES happen when i'm not playing games...it's rare.

ok first thing to check is drivers especially the graphics drivers but check the Motherboard chipset drivers too

Go to the ASUS website and check for newer drivers. download and install if available. (if not on the ASUS site they may be available direct from nVidia

This may solve the problem, and even if it does not it eliminates the main cause of freezes in vista. as the x64 driver situation is so fluid at the moment even though the laptop is new the drivers may be not the latest

i've already installed the newest graphic drivers from ASUS but not the chipset drivers...so i'll download those and let you know how it goes...

though on the site it says the chipset drivers are from july 08...and i bought this laptop in august 08...so they should already be on here

ok..it said my chipset drivers are up to date already...should i update my bios? there is a bios update available that just came out last week
