It is not the most precise of tests, but the brightness of the LED on the
front panel is an indication that the PS is not delivering too well..

Re: monitor going to sleep

The first thing to do is to disconnect the monitor cable from the P/C with
power to the monitor and P/C OFF!
Then apply power to the monitor Only, with the interface cable from the
monitor to the P/C disconnected (usually at the P/C.)

Most working monitors will show some sign of activity, and may display
something that basically indicates that the monitor is not getting an input
signal. You may be able to enter a setup mode that displays information
concerning the current monitor settings from a button on the monitor control
panel.

(Divide and Conquer!)

Re: monitor going to sleep

And, depending upon the P/C, flickering may indicate HD activity. Without
knowing what was typical for a particuliar P/C before it started to have
problems, light indications are not too useful.

Re: monitor going to sleep

I have the same problem periodically with a year old HP Media Center PC; I
can't
find a pattern except perhaps that the computer sometimes loses connection
with the wireless keyboard and mouse so moving the mouse fails to wake up
the computer.

It seems to relate to certain programs, such as Windows Mail, left open when
Windows goes to sleep.

In my case, it is not the monitor which you can check by turning it on and
off - you should get a brief manufacturer's or other power on message.

I wouldn't be too quick to replace the computer, just double check the
"power" settings and close programs down before going away from it for a
while - that solved my problem.

I wasn't talking about flickering at all. Over the years, I have noticed
that failing power supplies struggle to maintain brightness of the power
LED..

They all do that. It shows that there is no video output from the tower..

You need to try a different power supply first as that is the cheapest
option..

If there is still no life in the machine, you are looking to replace
expensive bits..

I don't know if matters have changed over the years but not that many
years ago it was practically impossible to find a replacement power
supply for a Compaq machine. Nothing available in the normal market
would fit in the box.

I don't think you've ever been inside a Compaq computer. Everything
used to be proprietary, including the mobo. Nothing but the hard drive
was replaceable.
