| 32bit vista | does this make sense? btw I am "plzhelp" I previously posted that my disk space was dropping every few house by a couple GB. no way i downloaded that much. well I use jdiskreport to open a tree of all my usage, now i added up all of the used space by me and its about 26.7 or so. Looking at my free space, its missing like 60 Gb. how is it im only using 26.7 GB, but missing 60? [img=http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/194/23439334ky4.th.jpg] Is it possible for viruses/spyware to have access to my HDD and store things on it without me knowing (dumb question but seems like the only logical explanation to me) thank you for the help. |

What part did you not understand of it? These are system restore points and shadow copies that is taking up the extra space. It won't show you this unless you specifically go to these files. If you use Disk Cleanup by following the instructions 1-7, 13-15 in Disk Cleanup tutorial you will get your space back. Reread this tutorial if you didn't understand. System Restore - disk space Disk Cleanup My earlier post. free disk space slowly decreasing This is not from viruses. This is the Restore Feature of Vista. |

| 32bit vista | Re: does this make sense? hmm, but isnt the green space in jdiskreport the restore?, thats only like 3GB which is where i am confused, + doesnt it only use about 15-30% of your HDD for restoring. and I have defragmented my computer + used Ccleaner. |

| Vista Ultimate SP2 x64 Windows 7 Ultimate x64 TECHNET | Re: does this make sense? No, if your hard drive is 230 gigabytes... then System Restore using possibly up to 30%, it could take away 70 gigabytes from usable space. .30 x 230= 69. 230 - 69 = 161 gigabytes If recovering this space is important to you, for you to be able to use it, why haven't you done the steps in Disk Cleanup?? Defragging and using ccleaner isn't going to give you back this space, only using Disk Cleanup in the tutorial. After you use Disk Cleanup, the space will slowly start being used up again, which you would then use Disk Cleanup again. You have 175 gigabytes free already, why do you need more space? |

| 32bit vista | Re: does this make sense? ok Airbot, I am resizing the restore points for my system restore. in the instructions it says =3gb, can I do =10gb? + i now understand what it is you were saying earlier, turns out my use shadow restorage space was 30gb, which completely explains where the other 30gbs went. THANK YOU VERY MUCH AIRBOT U OWN! |

| Vista Ultimate SP2 x64 Windows 7 Ultimate x64 TECHNET | Re: does this make sense? Yes, I know, it can be very confusing if you don't know about SR and Shadow Copies. The space that it quickly takes up. But, I would not really recommend that you resize the space used by SR and SC, rather just use Disk Cleanup evey so often to get the space back. You know you will be able to get it back at any time you want to, so it's better not to modify SR, just use DC. |

| 32bit vista | Re: does this make sense? Ok, well i am 31Gb/34GB SR space, and well, now that i know once it gets to 34GB it wont take up any more space from there I am not half as worried. I was thinking it would take up all my space until it was gone! what a scare. Thanks again Airbot, you couldn't of been any more help. |
