HELP...Identify processes running and...

I need help identifying processes running and how to shut them down so that I can free up memory...I have anywhere from 80 to +90 processes running. I have 2gb memory and 80%-90% is always being used? I have like 12-16 svchost running and have no idea what they are.

I scan my entire cpu every night with AVG and win def...It says I have a clean computer.

I would also scan with Malwarebytes Antimalware (MBAM). Get the free version
from www.malwarebytes.org.

Then if the machine is clean, do clean-boot troubleshooting to determine
what is running. To identify things you see, Google the process name.

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista -
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;929135

Using the System Configuration Utility:

Start Orb>Search box>type: msconfig and when it appears in the Results box
above, right-click and choose "Run as Administrator".

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation,
type the password, or click Continue. Then see what is on the Startup tab.
You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you do you'll get
a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Usually in Vista this will be
blocked by Windows Defender and you'll need to allow it so you can then
tick the box that says in effect, "don't bother me about this again".

Important - Do not use the System Configuration Utility to stop processes.
Instead, use Services.

Start Orb>Search box>type: services and when it appears in the Results box
above, right-click and choose "Run As Administrator". Confirm elevation as
needed.

The free Autoruns program is very useful for managing your Startup -

Re: HELP...Identify processes running and...

Is there a good free (I will pay if it is worth it) program that a novice could use to safely identify and control what processes are running? I know there has to be way to many running on my machine that do not need to be. 85-95 processes at any given time?

I downloaded auto-runs however, I am not confident I know which programs to remove from the start-up. I know I sound ignorant, and I am, but I do want to learn...Anyway, any tips for using AutoRuns would be greatly appreciated!

I am not a computer expert...I know I have to many processes running. I need a way of IDENTIFYING what each process is and then a way of shutting them off so that they do not automatically start?

I am going to the website "Black Viper" and see if I can figure something out...???????????????????????????????????????

This won't be a quick process. You MAY have to Google each service to
find out what it is. Much of what you see is probably something
proprietary to your computer.
