Task Manager problems

How do I get Task manager to work? It doesn't shut down frozen (non
responding) programs including WindowsMail, IE7 or MozillaFF... all of which
"stop responding" constantly. We're all getting sick and tired of having to
reboot to get anything done online. I can't find any infections on this PC
which has WDefender, Avast, Spybot, Adaware, A-Squared and ZoneAlarm. We
ran all these programs, updated, several times and no viruses or other
crapware was found. This Vista Home Premium is less stable than the old W98
we recently gave away. In fact we had less problems with W98 than we're
having with Vista. Someone please make some suggestions so we can get some
work done.

Re: Task Manager problems

I'll reply here since this is the section better suited then you duplicate thread in the other.

After some extended period of time I was seeing some problems with the taskmanager not coming up into view when right clicking on the taskbar. However when pressing the crl-alt-del key combination the full screen is then taken over with options for that as well as logging off, shutting down, restarting, or simply returning to the desktop with the cancel button.

One of the reasons for that is not having the automatic update setting enabled and manually running a check after a period of time. You won't find any malware causing this since it's Windows related.

Looks like you are so well protected that nothing can work on your machine.

Try uninstalling ZoneAlarm. There is a known bug with ZA that will
cause your problem. Other posts here and in the FF/ZA forum will
document this.

Re: Task Manager problems

the problem is your security suites itself.....only keep one good installed
and uninstall the other one. you may use eset nod32 SS, kaspersky 2009 or
norton internet security.....one of them is enough. and here all your problem
get solved automatically...

Re: Task Manager problems

Try Process Explorer:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb896653.aspx
I've found it more informative, easier to use, and more effective than Task
Manager for killing those annoying "Not Responding" programs.

Maybe someday MS will issue a fix to get rid of the problem with things not
responding, which I experience at least a dozen times a day, including with
Windows own components. This would certainly be an improvement over their
current policy of blaming everything on 3RD party vendors.

Re: Task Manager problems

In this instance, the problem lies directly with third-party vendors.
Process Explorer cannot kill the errant Firefox process any better than
Task Manager can. Once the problem executable appears in the 'system'
area it cannot be touched by 'user' processes - such as PE or TM.
