System Restore Issue

Ever since System Restore showed its face in Windows Me I always turned it
off as I rely on images.

In Vista RC-1 build 5728 I also turned off System Restore on all drives and
yet my C: drive (System) free space kept getting lower and lower. Going thru
Disk Cleanup | More Options | System Restore Cleanup I was able to recover
the missing HD space.

Also, when looking at System Properties | System Protection, even though
there was no checkmark in the box for the C: drive it indicated that the
"Most recent restore point" was earlier today. I checked the box for C: then
clicked Apply then unchecked it and clicked Apply again. This changed the
"Most recent restore point" to None.

Is it a bug that Vista will create restore point event though System Restore
is off? Or is it by design?

Re: System Restore Issue

Hi Fuzzy John,

The checkbox disables *automatic* restore points. However, a restore point
(shadow copy) is still created with each backup. This is a known issue.
Ideally we would delete the snapshots after the backup when the checkbox is
disabled, but this isn't currently implemented.

I guess you could call this "by design," even though it's not the ideal
design.
