Unwanted MS Messenger

My sister just bought a laptop with Vista installed, and each time she goes
into Windows, Messenger starts up, blocking her screen.
She does intend to use this app. I am familiar with how to get rid of it on
Windows XP, and tried to talk her through it over the phone, as she lives
quite a distance from me, but according to her the Add/Remove Window
components does not appear on the Control Panel screen. Is there a way to
remove this program?

She needs to use Control Panel's "Program and Features"

If she intends to use the program (as per what you wrote above) why
remove it....just use the preferences (options) menu to disable it from
starting up when her system boots.
