Vista - Endless disk thrashing

After return from "sleep", the disk on my Toshiba laptop has been thrashing
for almost 20 minutes until it finally stopped. I assume this is related to
the search indexing, although when I check in Task Manager, SearchIndexer is
not active, but an svchost is, with hundreds of megabytes of disk I/O.

I've limited (in theory) Search to just my Outlook file. Is it possible to
stop Search entirely?

The page file of 950 MB is entirely full, there's about 85 MB of RAM
available out of 512, so something is eating huge amounts of resources.
Pre-Vista, these figures would be say 200 MB, 150 MB free.

I have stopped the searchindexer coompletely and that does not seem to help i
am having the same problems I am noticing though that it is explorer which is
using the most resources. I want to why I have over a gig of memory and its
using at least 300mb and using 85 % of the cpu and the only thing i have
running is internet explorer and maybe one other program

So what you have to do is go into administrative tools, services, and stop,
then disable, the Windows Desktop Search. Defender may also be using lots of
disk access and CPU cycles.

I upgraded from 512 MB to 2.0 GB of RAM, turned off the disk
swapping/pagefile, and these changes contributed to making everything run
much better.

You still running wdm.exe as well? (Windows Vista Aero) I've noticed that
when active my system is using 89megs of memory for it. When I change to
Windows Vista Basic, it drops to 8megs of memory usage. Not as pretty
overall, but still looks basically the same and my system runs MUCH better.
(1gig memory on my system)

I know - they're aware of this, and performance will be optimised in the
near future )
Tell them on the Sentiments site though - just so they get a memory refresh
