Hard Drive disc Failure notice !

I have been getting repeated warnings that my Maxtor 40 GB HD is about to
fail, I have run all tools in Vista to check ( defrag, check disc, etc.) as
well as I have run Maxtors Power Max 4.23 which will certify thier Hard Drive
and even this application finds the hard-drive in question to be worthy and
error freem the disc with the warning of course is where Windows Vista is
resident.

Is S.M.A.R.T. enabled on the Maxtor drive?
It may be detecting some intermittent error and warning you(?)
or is/was a RAID drive

I had broken a (XP) RAID pair and was running with only one attached.
I kept getting that notification until I properly (booted in XP, since
my Silicon Image 0680 is not (Medley control) supported in RAID MODE)
removed the drive from the RAID set.

Re: Hard Drive disc Failure notice !

Depending on how important your data is, I'd recommend getting a new (and
incidentally bigger) hard drive as a precaution.

Re: Hard Drive disc Failure notice !

Download DiskCheckup (free for personal use) from;
http://www.passmark.com/products/diskcheckup.htm

It will analyse your hard drive's SMART parameters and tell you which, if any, are outside tolerance. It will also predict a probable time to failure based on the analysis.

Re: Hard Drive disc Failure notice !

In my experience, Maxtor drives suck.

I just bought a new Seagate with the 5 year warranty. This may not mean that
it's any more reliable, but, at least the drive won't become a doorstop
anytime soon. Would recommend the same if you need a new one.

Re: Hard Drive disc Failure notice !

i had the same problem with a hard drive, (error stating it's going to fail)
which was a year ago, still working! downloaded a program to fix the hard
drive but still states it's going to fail, anyway since i don't like errors,
it's time for a new one.
