Hi PJK,
A good question for an XP group, I'm not sure why you would ask this in a
Vista one.
General causes for things like that (slow startup, errors opening files,
gpf's) are malware and viruses. I would suggest you set about cleaning the
system from Safe mode using an updated antivirus program and spyware removal
software like AdawareSE.
