Vista root image back-up useless

I did a full system backup before switching to another raid controller. I
used the same two HD's but Vista would not restore to the partition because
the volume space (free gigabyte) was not the same?!? I am guessing the
problem is that the new RAID0 volume is a few MB smaller than the original,
but is there no way to just ignore that and unpack the back-up anyway?
