Vista - extremely long boot times

I rarely shut down my computer, however last night i installed some "optional" updates and rebooted, and I noticed that the load time is extremely long. I'm not quite sure if this was before or after the updates.

Here are my system specs:
Intel core 2 duo 6600 @ 2.4 Ghz
Asus Striker extreme motherboard
4 GB DDR2 OCZ Titanium 800Mhz
150 GB Raptor as primary
Evga 8800 GTS graphics card

During the animated loading screen, where the green bar moves across I counted a total of 76 complete passes. Any ideas what could be causing this? My windows index score is 5.3 at the lowest. Also I am running Vista ultimate x64.

Normally Vista boots far quicker than XP (in my experience anyhow), though
it'll probably slow down as I fill the system up with junk. As my system is
not unlike yours 76 passes does seem excessive (as does counting them).
However, there are occasions when Vista will take much longer to shut
down/reboot, such as when its installing or after installing updates. So if
it did this the one time and next time (or the time after that at least)
then I'd not worry to much. If it does this everytime, then I'd say there
is something seriously wrong! I suppose the cure is to have your PC
automatically download updates as they appear, but not install them until
you say so, and then to reboot at the earliest convenient time.

Restart it again - it was probably finishing your updates.

sorry I forgot to mention that I did reboot several times after installing the updates. I think i counted the passes on the 5-6th reboot. I left my computer off all day today and just turned it on, and it still takes approx. 5min of passes to load the log in screen. after i log in then, things go pretty smoothly. I personally think it may be a driver issue.

I did some searching on the forums as well as google, and saw some mention of a feature that will detect a problem with hardware and/or drivers. does anyone know where this may be?

I will keep trying to figure this out, but I think something is seriously wrong here.

Run a System Restore and restore the system to a state prior to the update
installation and see what that does for your boot problem.

Hm, before you do that, watch what's happening during the delay - is
the HD activity LED off, intermittent, or always on?

If always on, do you hear a normal random burbling, a periodic
clicking, or no sound at all?

Next, I'd compare these:
- normal boot and shut down
- as above, but unplug and disable all networks
- as above. but unplug all peripherals
- as above, after disabling all non-MS startups in MSConfig
- as above, after disabling all non-MS services in MSConfig
- Safe Mode
- Safe Mode Command Only

Don't forget to kill wireless, bluetooth etc. when "disabling all
networks and peripherals".
