Transparency shortcuts?

Are there any keyboard shortcuts to change the transparency on the fly?
I'd like to read my e-mail or newsgroups with Thunderbird while watching
TV underneath in the background. But be able to change the transparency
if I pop up a picture.

You could resize the TV window, dock it in a corner, setting it to always on
top. This is a good excuse to purchase a widescreen LCD. I bought a 20"
widescreen LCD and would never go back to 4:3.

I have the TV in a PIP window now on my 26" LCD. It is ok, but I still
wonder if the other idea is technically possible.
