| | No reply to post of 2 days ago I noticed no one tackled my post of 4-12 regarding Vista "trashing" older software. I guess that no one wants to comment about it. Here's what I had in compatible software. Antivirus = AVAST (claims to run on vista) and does except for ashmaisv. PhotoShop LE 5, Spybot, SpywareBlaster, IrfanView, Winamp 5.33, VLC player, KLC codec pack 1.72 (no QT or RP), MidiCat, eXtremMovieManager and Winzip. RealPlayer and QuickTime omitted for incompatibilities with agents and kernel. Other installed software, MS office 2003 SP2 and multiple updates, MS says OK. Bible ware, Canon MP-Navigator for Pixma MP800. Nvu 1.0, Quicken 2005 r6, Intel RAID manager, PerfectDisk 8, Nero 7.8.5.0, Creative SBXA drivers (basic VT drivers), Primax (dell) mouse, Belarc Advisor, NewsBin5, Mozilla Firefox 2.1, Thunderbird 1.5.0.10 and Java 1.6.0.01 from Sun. Latest Shockwave and flash for vista. The problem I had was that I had 7 old but compatible applications. Though Vista business tried to run these with the compatibility switch, the apps would not run in a normal state. With one I tried from old system - NewsRover 12 - the program kept crashing after 5 minutes - incompatibility between ntdll.dll and rovernzb.exe and SandH was notified of that. Hopefully they'll be able to fix this. I also own ACDsee version 8, which has an incompatibility between mplayer11 viewer and the photo parser built into mp11. I have moved back to XP temporarily until I can find better software or can work out fixes to let the old ones run like they should - I'd love to see RealPlayer be able to run under Vista (but it wont with Nero player/InCD installed, and I do require that in order to be able to exchange files on CD-DVD/RW discs. -- Lester Stiefel In Romans 1 there are qualities of Unregenerate man listed which describe him in the last days. | | Re: No reply to post of 2 days ago There is not much to say about older software that does not work - except get newer versions or find a replacement. I have quite a few programs and I just said the hell with them. Crying isn't going to make my older apps work. Asking for comments isn't going to make them work. The manufacturers said they don't work = end of story. The alternative is to use VirtualPC, install Windows XP as a virtual machine and run the older apps from within there. -- Regards, Richard Urban Microsoft MVP Windows Shell/User (For email, remove the obvious from my address) Quote from George Ankner: If you knew as much as you think you know, You would realize that you don't know what you thought you knew! | | Re: No reply to post of 2 days ago Richard pretty well provides a legitimate reply. As as aside: I do not understand the reason for multiple installations of AV, Spyware, Browers and so on. Singularly they can cause problems - doubly so there are compatibility problems and more. Check with the software authors for compatibility. The Vista compatible version of Avast runs fine on this installation. FYI, it would make your post much more readable if you put in paragraphs. As is I didn't bother reading most of it. -- Rock [MS-MVP User/Shell] |

| | Re: No reply to post of 2 days ago You'd have to ask AVAST about why it doesn't run on Vista when they say it does. As a rule, you don't want to run any utility or security programs designed for XP (or anything else) on Vista. A lot of the products you listed fall into that category. Most general apps like the word processors and such work OK. Some need patches. I had to patch Paint Shop Pro and Visual Studio. But all the Office 2003 apps seem to work OK. A lot of drivers for XP don't work in Vista. You need Vista drivers. If it's supposedly a Vista driver and still doesn't work, you have to ask the hardware manufacturer what's up. Not much else one can say about this issue. Some older stuff works, some doesn't.
