Vista - Can't create restore points

Can't create restore points

I actually love Vista, but since a difficult installation with Vista Business 32, it will not save a restore point. I get an error (0x80042318) which says "An error was detected in the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). THe problem occurred while trying to contact VSS writers. Please verify that the Event System service and the VSS service are running and check for associated errors in the event logs.

Both the event viewer and the VSS service are started.

Help would be greatly appreciated. Without restore points in previous OS's, I wasn't nervous. Now I am.

Thanks..

Re: Can't create restore points

Tell me more about your difficult installation. The reason I ask is that
I've seen new computers with poor imaging (OS installation by the OEM) that
results in all kinds of backup and system restore problems. I would suspect
you're in a similar boat.

Re:Can't create restore points

The difficult installation had to do with a faulty DIMM which threw errors all over, but which would seem to work all right by itself but not with its companion. Anyway, I replaced it and then the install went normally as a complete install over a W2K OS. Vista has been working very smoothly except for a few small issues that I have been able to fix through some of the posts in this forum, like the disappearing optical drives. Thanks for asking.

Re: Can't create restore points

Ms. Zoeller,

i posted recently that, in the 3 weeks that i've had this computer, Vista
Home Premium has occupied a staggering 43 GB of hdd. forum members have
attributed this to Vista's ample allotments for restore points, and that it
is nothing to be concerned with.

still, i wonder if it does qualify as an abnormality, the etiology being my
oem's "poor imaging".

Re: Can't create restore points

You can see for yourself the amount of space used for restore points using
our instructions at
http://blogs.technet.com/filecab/arc...ows-vista.aspx

Also, you might find this article interesting - a lot of people assume that
System Restore in Vista is the same as in XP, but they are completely
different.

Re: Can't create restore points

Smedlow, for VSS errors I have been advising customers to call Microsoft
Product Support unless they have a new computer, in which case I advise them
to contact their OEM. If you have a new copy of Vista, you are entitled to a
free support call. I wish I could provide more help but the turnaround time
for getting the VSS team to help me with VSS errors is quite long. Our
Product Support team has specialized tools for troubleshooting VSS errors,
and they are your best source for assistance.

Re: Can't create restore points

Hi,

I have Vista Ultimate installed on a 48GB partition with 20GB free and
System Restore works perfectly and have 10 restore points available.

How much free space is there on the 43GB partition Vista's installed on?
