Task Manager

not sure if this is for this group or not,
just wondering what needs to and what doesn't need to be running in the
background?

Just about everything needs to be running. Vista handles background programs
fine. You can use Windows Defender's Software Explorer to disable the bad
programs like Creative's helper and tools--which really screw up Startup. You
can also see what is starting up and where it comes from in Software Explorer.
