| | Windows Vista Backup is failing Hello, For the past couple months, I've had the Backup and Restore Center in Windows Vista backup the files of my computer once a week. I was surprised to find that my scheduled backup failed last night with the following error: [Window Title] Backup Status and Configuration [Main Instruction] The backup did not complete successfully. [Content] An error occurred. The following information might help you resolve the error: If an MM error is returned which is not defined in the standard FsRtl filter, it is converted to one of the following errors which is guaranteed to be in the filter. In this case information is lost, however, the filter correctly handles the exception. (0xC00000EA) Backup time: 4/23/2007 11:47 PM Backup location: External (G ![]() [Try again] [Adjust settings] [Close] Thinking that this "may" be a fluke, I manually tried to run it again, however I got the same results. I'm currently have Vista Ultimate and I am backing up to a Maxtor OneTouch 500GB external USB2.0 drive. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance, Ryan |

| | RE: Windows Vista Backup is failing Could be the System account doesn't have write access to the external HD. Is it firewire or USB? I assume that there's plenty of free space, its formatted, and that you can access it under windows explorer? P.s. Is it formatted same as drive backing up? (Not that it should make a difference) -- Guy McNeill "EllBoy007" wrote: > Hello, > > For the past couple months, I've had the Backup and Restore Center in > Windows Vista backup the files of my computer once a week. | | RE: Windows Vista Backup is failing Guy, I checked the external HD and System does have write access - including the directory that the backup is being placed. (Windows set all this up and the backup has run about 5 or 6 times on its own as scheduled). There is plenty of space to write the backup, it is formatted as NTFS (same as the drive being backed up) and I can read/write via Explorer. -Ryan "GuyMcNeill" wrote: > Could be the System account doesn't have write access to the external HD. > > Is it firewire or USB? > I assume that there's plenty of free space, its formatted, and that you can > access it under windows explorer? > > P.s. | | Re: Windows Vista Backup is failing I've never seen this error before...these strange ones usually mean something funky is happening on your system. I can take a closer look at this if you will send me the following via email? Just remove "online" from my address. If you need help with any of these steps, let me know. 1. A description of the problem, including the exact error message and error code (a screenshot will work) 2. A screenshot of your Disk Management screen showing disks and volumes. 3. Contents of %windir%\logs\windowsbackup\ 4. Generate a log file using the instructions below and email it to me: Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Asr, create a new key called LogFileSetting Under LogFileSetting, create a new DWORD value called EnableLogging. Right-click that value, click Modify, and then enter 00000001 (hexadecimal) or 1 (decimal) Under LogFileSetting, create a new String value called LogPathName. Right-click that value, click Modify, and then enter C:\asr.log. Next, reproduce the error. You should have a file called asr.log under c:\. You can delete the registry key when you are done. -- This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. Want to learn more about Windows file and storage technologies? | | Re: Windows Vista Backup is failing Hi, An anti-virus software you are running on your computer might be accessing certain files that are used during the backup process. Stop or close any anti-virus programs and then try the back up again. Your backup should work fine if you disable eTrust before running the backup. This worked for me. Here is a link with a bit more information. http://blogs.msdn.com/jrubino/archiv...ta-backup.aspx |
