Windows Vista starts up automatically when it's shut down complete

I would be happy if anyone could give me some direction to a problem I have
    with Windows Vista Basic.

Whenever, I have finished using my laptop with Vista Basic Home edition, I
shut it down completely. The next day, the laptop seems to power up
    automatically without my assistance whatsoever.

Although I have the McAfee antivirus and carryout daily scanning which has
so far revealed nothing, I am concerned that this may be a problem with the
    Vista software.

I do not have any other problem with this edition of Windows.

    Please help.

    Thanks in advance

makes a difference on what power off option you use.
    sleep, hibernate, power off.
for sleep and hibernate there are log files in vista that might point to the culprit.
event logs, scheduled task logs, reliability and performance.

if you really POWERED OFF, check the bios to see if you have any of the WAKE ON options set.

    Thank you for your help.

While looking through other comments in the microsoft communities, I found
the problem to be in the BIOS. Apparently, the wake up option was enabled,
which automatically turned on the computer at a specific time. It mattered
not whether the computer was in sleep mode, hibernate or power down.

I hope that this helps any other VISTA or Windows user with the same or
    similar problem

    To add just a little.
The operating system is irrelevant for the BIOS setting.
With the "Wake on..." setting, the computer will power on whether
Windows, Linux or any other operating system is installed.
Even if no operating system is installed.

I still use XP but my daughter has just purchased a new computer with Vista -
she is experiencing this problem of her computer coming on automatically at
SIX o'clock in the morning. How does one change this setting in BIOS?
Neither she nor I are very good at computer stuff so please explain step by
step - and hopefully it will be simple! Thank you for any help you can give
    us/her.
If you could also email me the directions I would appreciate it as I might
    not find this helpline again.
