Back up your data to external media. 2. Download a diagnostic utility from the hard drive mftr.'s website (or get SeaTools from Seagate). You will create a bootable floppy or cd with the file you download. You will need third-party burning software to create the bootable cd. Boot with the media you created and do a thorough test of the hard drive. Depending on the size of the drive, this may take an hour or more. If the drive fails any physical tests, then replace it. 3. After you have done the steps above, if the drive passed all physical tests or you need more help, come back with the results and more details about your computer. Then you could boot with the Vista DVD (recovery console) and try running check disk from there.
