Visual Effects Settings

Hi all,

Windows Vista can run slow on older hardware. One way to speed things
up a little bit is to deactivate visual effects;

1. Right-click Computer and click Properties
2. In the Tasks list, click "Advanced System Settings"
3. On the Advanced tab, there is a Performance section. Click
Settings.
4. On the Visual Effects tab, choose "Adjust for Best Performance".

Ordinary (non-administrators) could do this on Windows XP, but on
Windows Vista it is protected by User Access Control. Unfortunately
in our environment we can only permit ordinary users and have to
disable User Access Control to prevent any tampering with the system.
This makes it impossible to perform the steps set out above.

It appears that this behaviour can be implemented on Windows XP by
applying a VisualFXSetting

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
\VisualEffects]
"VisualFXSetting"=dword:00000002

However, this doesn't seem to work on Vista. An Internet search
provided a list of registry settings, but not a simple way of doing
it.

I suppose what I'm really after is something like a RunDLL32 command
that will do the steps set out above that can be put in a shortcut
that an ordinary (non-administrator) user can use. Anyone know of any
such command?

I can go so far by setting the appearance to "Windows Standard" and
switching off the Effects, but this doesn't do all settings.

Kind regards,

Anwar
