Windows Indexing & Search cannot be started

Running Vista Home Premium, recently reinstalled back to factory settings
after having all sorts of software problems and errors. Now Indexing and
Windows Search are not running and cannot be started.

In Control Panel, Indexing Options: "Indexing is not running." The list of
indexed locations is empty, "Modify" and "Advanced" buttons are grayed out,
leaving "Close" as the only option.

In Services Manager, Windows Search, clicking "Start the Service" generated
this message: "Windows could not start the Windows Search on Local Computer.
For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft
service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code
-2147218141."

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications and
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Temp (mentioned in another thread on a
similar issue) are empty.

Outlook 2007 is also not indexing or searching correctly--is that the same
problem or unrelated?

Thanks for any help or advice!

RE: Windows Indexing & Search cannot be started

Hello Nevet,
I'm having the exact same problem you mentioned. Have you found a "fix" for
getting the Windows Search service started? If so, I would be very
interested in knowing what you found.

Thanks in advance,
Brad

RE: Windows Indexing & Search cannot be started

Brad,

Yes, I got it working. It turns out something was corrupt with the index
location. See the thread here:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/com...8-38d990fdb008

Or search for my name on the Vista newsgroup and look for the thread titled
"Windows Searc Won't Start".

Good luck!
