Vista - getting black screen

My computer starts up fine and everything, but after i try to log in, i get a
black screen, like no tasks or programs had started running. I can access all
of my programs from the task manager and clicking "New task," but the start
menu, desktop, and a bunch of other things won't show up. Can anyone tell me
how to fix this problem

oh, yeah, and i have Windows Vista Basic, if that can help diagnose the
problem.

Try this update from Microsoft. I saw it on another post and it may be of

Saw this on another post about black screens. Try it , as it may cure your

my brother thought he knew what he was doing, and it ended up in my computer
totally crashing down. i ran through system recovery and everything turned
out fine.

i found out that i could run a lot of things, but most of them shut down the
second i started them.

oh well. my computer's running fine now.
