Vista Ultimate has wrong amount of RAM displayed.

I have just built a new machine with Vista Ultimate on it and I loaded it
with 4 gig of RAM. The problem is, the BIOS sees the 4 gig but Vista only
sees 3 gig? Does this mean the OS is only utilizing 3 gig?

Re: Vista Ultimate has wrong amount of RAM displayed.

Do you have the 32 or 64 bit version of Ultimate installed?

Vista Ultimate 64-bit

Re: Vista Ultimate has wrong amount of RAM displayed.

Vista 32-bit won't use or recognize more than 3.something GB. Vista 64-bit will use your whole 4GB and more, but there can be difficulty with some hardware and BIOS.

Yes, that's what it means.

All 32-bit versions of Windows, even though they have a 4GB address
space, can only use *around* 3.1GB of RAM. That's because some of that
space is used by hardware and not available to the operating system
and applications. The amount you can use varies, depending on what
hardware you have installed, but is usually around 3.1GB. But I've
seen numbers as high as 3.5GB.
