Can't use single click or do a System Restore

I've had my new Dell computer with Vista Home Premium for less than a month.
It seems to me when I first got started I had the option of single clicking
or double clicking to get programs and windows to open. I chose single click.
Now I have to dbl click to get anything to open and when I go into folder
options single click is grayed out so I can't even select it. Why is this?
I thought I would do a System Restore and maybe I could get the single click
back but I've tried to do a System Restore twice and both times I got a
message about an "unspecified error" and was told the restore was not
successful. The second time I tried it, I used a different restore date but
got the same message. Any ideas what is going on here? I would really
    appreciate some help.

Sandee, did you ever get this problem fixed? If you did not, I have a
    few suggestions.

Go to the Control Panel and open Folder Options. In that, on the
General tab is where you set the single/double click for icons (which
it sounds like you have been to already). Try clicking the "Restore
Defaults" button just before the "Click items as follows" section, then
try to set the system to use single-click.

Did you install anything new, or make changes to the configuration at
about the same time the problem started? If you did, then that is most
likely the cause of the problem. You might try uninstalling any
software or patches you loaded just before the problem started to see
    if it goes away.

The absolute worst case scenario you can back up your data and then
either use the CTRL+F11 option (just after powering the computer on) to
reload the Dell factory image, or manually reinstall Vista and the
    drivers.

Larry, Thank you so much for answering my post. I did get my problem fixed.
I finally bit the bullet and called the Dell Customer Support. The tech I
got spent a lot of time trying to find the problem and he also suggested it
may have to do with something new I loaded. I wasn't sure what it was so we
ended up having to start the computer from the beginning. Only instead of
f11 I think we used f8. Everything has been working fine since then & I'm
    back to the single click.

Thank you so much for answering me. It is nice to know there are resources
for people like me that need help once in a while.

Glad to hear everything is working again.

If the problem was not caused by something you installed (software,
Windows updates, etc) then the only other thing I can think of is
malware (virus, spyware, etc) as the most likely cause. Although I
must admit, I've never heard of a virus or spyware messing with the
single/double click settings. The fact the system restore option failed
makes me suspect something mangled at least part of the registry but at
this point it is probably impossible to determine what exactly caused
    it.

    Hi Sandee,

As to the System Restore issue, are here any Norton applications installed?
If so take a look at the following article.
