Can't link to Prolink print server

I have been having trouble accessing my Samsung SCX-4200 printer via a
Prolink PUB 2300 3-port print server.

FIrst I installed the printer on my Vista Home Premium laptop and my XP
desktop, and it ran on both with no problems. Vista downloaded an
updated printer driver.

Then I installed it on the print server, using my XP desktop. No
problems to install, or connect from the XP machine.

Then I tried installing it on the Vista machine, with downloaded Vista
print server software. Instant problems. The Prolink install failed.

I did some research, and tried some suggestions. These included adding a
new printer as a local port, and also adding as TCP/IP (I found the IP
address, and pinged it succesfully)

For the local port, I tried to create a new port called \\PrintServer
\lp1. (Also tried com1, lpt1, pid2, Samsung - the shared name on the XP
is Samsung)

All gave "The Device is not ready", and I coudn't go any further.

If I try to add as TCP/IP I seem to get there, the device is found, but
finally get

"Unable to install printer; Operation could not be completed (error
0x000006be)"

and then if I go back to to Add printer I get

"Windows can't open Add Printer. The local print spooler service is not
running. Please restart the spooler or restart the machine"

And

"Spooler SubSystem App stopped working and was closed"

I also tried to add by sharing the XP network printer, but couldn't get
the permissions.

Other Help in MS refered to using Group Policy Editor, which is not in
Vista Home Premium, or at least not on my laptop, and also Point and
Print doesn't seem to be available on the laptop as well. I have browsed
this group, and seen similar problems, but not exactly the same.

Any help would be appreciated.

I must say I am very disillusioned with Vista, having earlier struggled
to get the Vista machine working on the network. It seems every time I
try to connect to something, problems, problems, problems.
