| | Can't install HP printer driver I have a new Sony VAIO laptop with Vista loaded and an HP Officejet 6310 All-In-One printer which I bought after I couldn't load the printer drivers for my old HP inkjet. (So much for that Apple commercial where PC says "Just buy a new printer"!)I have a separate, Vista-specific, install disk for the new printer. I get through the entire install and then, when I'm asked to install the printer drivers, this is the error message I get: WINDOWS FOUND DRIVER SOFTWARE FOR YOUR DEVICE BUT ENCOUNTERED AN ERROR WHILE ATTEMPTING TO INSTALL IT. THE VOLUME FOR A FILE HAS BEEN EXTERNALLY ALTERED SO THAT THE OPENED FILE IS NO LONGER VALID. There are no error codes and no place to ask for help. I've been on the phone for hours with Sony and have sent dozens of emails to HP and nobody knows what to do about this. The only references I've seen to this volume problem doesn't seem to relate to install printer drivers and are several years old. I've been working on this for more than a week (including the purchase of this new printer) and I'm about to pull my hair out! Help! |

| | Re: Can't install HP printer driver Yes very weird. I saw that there was a fix for this on Win2k SP4 in the network software. I assume you are loading the files from a local source rather than a network source. (Win32:ERROR_FILE_INVALID 1006, NTSTATUS:STATUS_FILE_INVALID 0xC0000098). Did you attempt to install the drivers that are included in Vista for this device? | | Re: Can't install HP printer driver I originally loaded the printer drivers from the HP site... that was for my old HP 2610 inkjet. When I got the new printer, it came with the Vista disk. I haven't been able to find any specific printer drivers in the Vista software. Of course, I'm having trouble finding anything in Vista. I'll see if I can track down the fix you mentioned. Thank you very much. "Alan Morris [MSFT]" wrote: Quote: > Yes very weird. I saw that there was a fix for this on Win2k SP4 in the > network software. | | Re: Can't install HP printer driver I'm afraid it didn't work. (It didn't work when I was on this page when I originally downloaded the drivers for my old printer) But I downloaded the drivers anyway. Then the HP All-In-One screen comes up. The choices are: Install more software Uninstall Help Add a Device Exit I clicked Add a Device, then Connect directly to this computer, plug in the USB cable (printer is on) then, after waiting a LONG time (it seems to get hung up right at the end), I get the message THE VOLUME FOR A FILE HAS BEEN EXTERNALLY ALTERED SO THAT THE OPENED FILE IS NO LONGER VALID. I've seen this every day for four days. During one of my many failed installs, this error message popped up. I've only seen it once. PRINTER DRIVER WAS NOT INSTALLED. OPERATION COULD NOT BE COMPLETED (ERROR 0x000003ee). Am I going to have to reinstall Vista? (I hope not!) "Carey Frisch [MVP]" wrote: Quote: > Turn-off power to your HP OfficeJet 6310. | | Re: Can't install HP printer driver How is the printer connected to the VISTA computer? USB or Ethernet? Did you uninstall any HP software previously installed This document tells you how to uninstall the HP software: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...2196&lc=en&cc= us&dlc=en&os=2093&product=1119598&lang=en and this one tells you how to install: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...9419&lc=en&cc= us&dlc=en&os=2093&product=1119598&lang=en If it is connected by USB you need to install the software before you plug the USB cable from the printer into the PC and only connect it when the installation software tells you to, or you reach Finish. I also find it sometimes helpful to install the software using Run as Administrator (right mouse click on the downloaded software exe file and select Run as Administrator from the context menu. Just a reminder -- if you are going to try any further installation, first uninstall what is on the PC including deleting any Printer icons in the Printers folder. Note also that the Home versions of VISTA do not contain the Fax & Scan utility of Windows but any in your AIO may work or be made to work. You may want to have a browse through the documents linked to at: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...=us&dlc=en&pro duct=1119598&os=2093&lang=en I've just been looking at the pdf file Setup Guide and if you don't have your copy I suggest you download it: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00633795.pdf Good luck! |

| | Re: Can't install HP printer driver I've done all these steps a half-dozen times, including uninstalling each time and deleting the icons. I've made sure I wasn't connected until I was prompted. I've even gotten a new USB cable. The only thing I haven't tried is running it as the administrator. I'll try that, but I have a strong feeling that's not going to help. It's just not seeing the printer drivers. Am I going to have to pay to talk to somebody at Microsoft to get this problem fixed? Can it be fixed? Thanks for all your help. Let's hope Run as Administrator (and turn off all AntiVIrus and Firewalls while installing -- if you are worried, unplug your internet cable; but don't forget to turn protection back on again) |

| | Re: Can't install HP printer driver I finally got a response from HP that worked! This is the HP-Vista link they emailed to me: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...s=2093&lang=en I turned off all my firewalls and clicked "Run" instead of "Save". I don't know what did it, but I finally have a connection to my printer. Thanks to everybody who helped me.
