Broken drivers after Windows Updates

Our network admin reports this problem: recently-installed Dell computers
with Vista. Whenever they get a Windows update, the printer drivers stop
working. They aren't deleted, but they don't work, and re-installing doesn't
fix the problem. We have to have users do a System Restore back to the
installation date, in December. Needless to say, that's not so great.

Mostly we're dealing with HP printers. We spoke with HP and they were unable
to identify the problem, so we think something's up with the Windows Update
settings, or with how the drivers were originally installed. Or with the
trust settings, maybe?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Broken drivers after Windows Updates

Are printer drivers installed during the Windows Update process? They would
not be critical updates. I've seen issue where WU identifies a network
connection as a local device and the update fails since it's not at the end
of a bus enumerator.

Can you print if you install a local printer? or all printing is not
working? Is the print spooler service running after the update?

No, I don't think so.

Drivers fail for both local and network printers.

Is the print spooler service running after the update?

I don't know. How would I check?
