| | Unexpected error when faxing After composing a fax ... just a cover page with no additional items, I entered a fax number in the correct format +1 (nnn) nnn-nnnn. After pressing send I receive an unexpected error. Of course the fax doesn't get sent. By the way - scanning seems to work ok. Is there an update for this application Is there a way to reinstall the windows fax and scan software or to run a detect and repair. Thanks |

Is there a way you could convince us that your fax modem should work with WFS, or ever has? -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "Silicon City" <SiliconCity@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:857F98F0-3C34-48F6-A0BE-7E249BAFF782@xxxxxx Quote: > After composing a fax ... just a cover page with no additional items, I > entered a fax number in the correct format +1 (nnn) nnn-nnnn. | | Re: Unexpected error when faxing Hi Russ, Thanks for attempting to help... The modem is connected to phone line which I'm sure gets a dial tone. No other devices are on the same phone line (no phones or ans. mach, dsl lines etc). Sequence 1. start the software 2. click "new fax" (bottom left) and choose generic cover page from dropdown 3. fill in the phone number in this exact format +1 (555) 555-1212 4. Enter some text into the subject & fax body 5. hit send "< ...> "are placed around the phone # & the window disappears giving one the (false) hope that the fax is being prepared for transmission 6. I check the outbound queue - the fax appears as an entry - formatting looks good 7. After a short period a window opens which says "An unexpected error occurred" (I'll get you the exact wording) There is no further information regarding the error. I don't know if I should expect something out of the speakers.... but I get nothing - volume is set to audible leve .. I play music on the machine so that works.... The modem is inside my Lenovo Thinkpad x61 tablet pc You are correct in that I don't think I ever tried to use the modem for anything so I will try to "test it" [any suggestions in how to do that .... i figured the testing would be to a...... send a fax ;-) ] and I'll report back on that. Thank you for your help. I guess where you're headed is if the modem is not working the natural conclusion is that is what's generating the unexpected error.. which seems reasonable. I'll also check the driver version... etc. to ensure that's all reasonable. Thanks "Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook]" wrote: Quote: > Is there a way that you could provide more precise steps to repro this > error? Is there a way you could provide precise error messages? | | Re: Unexpected error when faxing Seems to me that you should start by verifying that your fax modem is on the VHCL list. You should also provide the steps used and the outcome of configuring your fax account. -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "Silicon City" <SiliconCity@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:FB77C2EA-531D-4066-8BAD-51C44BEF7FC1@xxxxxx Quote: > Hi Russ, Thanks for attempting to help... > > The modem is connected to phone line which I'm sure gets a dial tone. | | Re: Unexpected error when faxing Silicon City You cannot enter the fax number as you have described. After you have checked that your fax modem is compatible, try it this way. Open WFS New fax - top left pick cover page required click on 5th icon from left (in new fax popup) enter all the information that's required here, eg: Name pick country code (you can uncheck this if it's a local fax) enter number then complete your subject line and message. I believe that it will work then. -- regards CL ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' "Silicon City" wrote: Quote: > Hi Russ, Thanks for attempting to help... > > The modem is connected to phone line which I'm sure gets a dial tone. | | Re: Unexpected error when faxing Working now. I looked again at the fax settings and noticed a modem named "Standard Modem". I failed to recognize there was also a modem named "Thinkpad Modem". Once I set the WFS to "Thinkpad Modem" everything worked fine. I have no idea where the "Standard Modem" came from - maybe a cell phone or something.. The formatting of the phone number is a bit of a problem b/c when I put the +1 (xxx) xxx-xxxx the phone company balks . If I remove the + WFS generates an error window that says the phone # isn't in the correct format. If I click OK it sends the fax and seems to work ok. So Vista IS now faxing. Thanks everyone for your help.
