Printers Won't Remove/Delete

Vista Ultimate x64:

Printer worked fine w/XP sp2

Have Brother 1440 printer listed 2x (as “Brother HL-1440” and “Brother HL-1440 series”) and both say they are offline. Trying to delete both but will not remove…get error msg “Printer cannot be removed. Operation could not be completed ( error 0x00000057)”.

This printer was to run over network (printserver) with local TCP/IP port created for use. As Admin through CMD prompt, tried stopping print spooler and then delete and got error msg that said I needed to have print spooler running. Also there are no print jobs listed for either printer.

Looked on network for "Auto Brother 1440", per other post in this forum, on (3) other net attached boxes and removed the only (1) reference to this. Still no Luck.

Went into Cntl Pnl as Admin>Server Properties>Drivers and tried to remove both but rec’d error :

1) The following package(s) can not be deleted:
brohla1a.inf
This package contains the following driver(s) that are in use:
Brother HL-1440 series; This driver is used on:
Brother HL-1440 series
The following driver(s) can not be deleted:
Driver Brother HL-1440 series is in use. It is used on:
Brother HL-1440 series

2) Unable to remove Brother HL-1440 series, x64, Type 3 –User Mode driver. The specified printer driver is currently in use.

3) The following package(s) can not be deleted:
prnbr001.inf
This package contains the following driver(s) that are in use:
Brother HL-1440; This driver is used on:
Brother HL-1440
The following driver(s) can not be deleted:
Driver Brother HL-1440 is in use. It is used on:
Brother HL-1440

I'm stumped and frustrated. Any thoughts?

Thanx in advance

Re: Printers Won't Remove/Delete

E:\>winerror error 0x00000057 is invalid parameter

87 ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER

Launch printmanagement.msc for printer administration tasks when running
Ultimate

If Brother has an uninstall utility for the 1440 series driver be sure to
run that since Brother has other stuff that is installed that the spooler
service is not notified about.

The HL-1440 should be the drivers included with the OS.

The printer must be removed before attempting to delete the print driver or
port.
