Using Print Management with a 2003 R2 server on Hyper-V

I have a Windows Server 2008 64 bit server running Hyper-V with a
virtualised Windows Server 2003 R2 32-bit instance. We used to run this
server on dedicated hardware. What I am trying to do is manage printers on
the 2003 R2 server using the Print Management console in Windows Vista. I
never had any trouble managing the physical server using Print Management
but when I try to manage printers on the virtualised server it always
behaves as if the server is offline and/or inaccessible, and won't let me
see any printers on it.

I had the same problem when I was setting up the 2008 server to let me
manage printers on it from my Vista box. After a while I found out I had to
allow the File and Print Sharing exception in Windows Firewall on the 2008
server. However, the 2003 R2 server does not have Windows Firewall
installed.

An alternative message sometimes seen is that I do not have permissions or
rights to manage printers on the 2003 R2 server. However, in Vista I am
logging on as a domain administrator.
