| | Default Printer reverts to XPS Using RC1, the default printer reverts back to XPS Document Writer on each boot of the system. I change the default printer, but each time the system is booted, it has reverted back to XPS Document Writer.... Question is.... has this been resolved in RC2 and RTM??? Question is... is there a work around for this issue for RC1??? It would be nice to have default printer working until Vista is released in January, but if a work around is not available.... will grin and wait..... Thanks |

| | Re: Default Printer reverts to XPS Disable the XPS printer..... XP and Vista will always default to the first printer they 'find'... since they find the local XPS printer before they find the network printers, it naturally becomes the default because the network printers are not available at bootup. -- Cari (MS-MVP) Windows Technologies - Printing & Imaging http://www.coribright.com/windows "Willi Girard" <WilliGirard@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:5A9BE3F7-3AD3-4EA3-99F3-6E4265DFA6CE@microsoft.com... > Hi you all, > > I got the same problem (and its not a HP Printer). i added network > printers, > set one as default and after a reboot i wasn't able to set a default > printer. if i choose "Set as default Printer" nothing happens. > and the default printer was reverted to XPS. > > in the last post i red that this issue has been fixed in RTM. | ultimate 32bit | Re: Default Printer reverts to XPS Good evening, I have been recently struggling with this problem (revert to XPS printer as default). I am not absolutely certain, but, I would swear this is happening many times, regardless of computer reboots, based on the fact that I seldom cycle my computer (1-2 times per month). I am working with Windows Vista Ultimate Edition (32-bit), OEM version on a Dell computer, and have recently installed a copy of the SP1 software from MS, downloaded in late March 2008. Ever since installing this, I have noticed problems wtih the default printer reverting back to the XPS printer. I, too, have two network printers and this XPS printer, one of the network printers (my preferred default) is an HP Photosmart D7260 (configured as network printer), set to talk to the printer via the standard TCP/IP port; technically, this would make this a local printer (local port being the defined TCP/IP port). The other printer is printer shared by another computer. I never had this problem until after the SP1 install; again this is RTM version of SP1, and I have not installed any prior version of this update to vista. I can disable the XPS printer, but, I don't know what the ramifications will be when doing so. Has anything more been found on this issue? TIA. -Mark |

| Vista Ultimate 32bit | Re: Default Printer reverts to XPS Basically, I have the exact same configuration. Vista Ultimate, and just installed SP1. It is not possible to set default printer to anything other than the XPS printer. Cari tries to explain the technical reason why it's reset to XPS on boot. This is NO exuse! IT MUST BE POSSIBLE TO SET A NETWORK PRINTER AS DEFAULT!!! And obviously, this is not what happens in the case that I and mangliss experience. It is not possible to set the default to a shared network printer at all. I repeat: IT MUST BE POSSIBLE TO SET A NETWORK PRINTER AS DEFAULT!!! Microsoft, please fix this BUG immediately!
