Vista - Printer OFFLINE

Foregive my learning curve on networks, sharing, permissions, etc., but I
have read a lot and am still lost. Here's the deal:

Lexmark E120n has choice of USB & Ethernet ports. I'd like to use the
Ethernet port. I have one Vista Home Premium PC and the one printer.
Network Discovery, File Sharing, Public Folder Sharing, Printer Sharing are
all set to ON. Each time I turn on the printer, it defaults to Public
Network and the printer is OFFLINE! I can delete it and "Add a New Printer"
and change it to Private Network. Next time I turn it on, it's back to
Public Network with printer OFFLINE. What more can I do?

disable SNMP in the printer port configuration
